Mattancherry Palace was built by the Portuguese in 1555 and was presented to the Raja of Cochin, Veera Kerala Varma as a gesture of goodwill.
Cochin/Mattancherry Synagogue was originally constructed in 1568 and was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1662 and rebuilt two years later.
Ferries shuttle backward and forward across the narrow strait to Vypeen and Gundu Islands. There are good beaches here.
