In days gone by the only way to India from the north-west was through Punjab. The Aryans themselves came this way. The Aryan Civilization took shape in the basin of the Sindhu or Indus. This area was known as 'Sapta-Sindhu' or Seven Seas.

In 327 B.C. Alexander had named this area Pento Patomia maintaining the principle of five. Guru Govind Singh called his motherland 'Madradesha' but Punjabis were not very keen. They love the name of Punjab and are proud of it. Their language is Punjabi and their religion is mostly Sikhism. The Muslim rulers occupied Punjab in 1027 and the British in 1849.
