As East Sikkim is located on the Tibetan border most foreigners are not permitted to enter this area. However the capital, Gangtok standard tourist permitts are allowed.
Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was built in 1958 and promotes research into Mahayana Buddhism and the language and traditions of Tibet. It is home to the largest collection of books, manuscripts, works of art and silks in the world.
Chorten and Gompa has a huge gold apex which can be seen from many points in Gangtok. Gompa is the institute for young lamas which is located about 500m from the Chorten.
Tsuk La Khang is the principle place of worship for Buddhists. Permission may be given at the gate to see this building.
